Manual Lymph Drainage Therapy (MLD)

The lymphatic system is present almost everywhere in the body and is crucial to its ability to move, balance and recirculate fluids. We rely on our vast network of lymphatic vessels to transport lymph fluid to the lymph nodes, where it can be filtered and processed. Depending on the area of the body, lymph consists of proteins, water, immune cells, fatty acids, toxins, hormones and various other cells and cell debris. When our lymph circulation is blocked or hindered, proteins, fluids and toxins can accumulate, possibly leading to edema, fibrosis and a less efficient immune system.

MLD is a specialized hands-on technique that consists of very gentle and rhythmic movements, administered by a trained therapist. Each stroke stretches the skin in the direction of the lymphatic flow to encourage the movement of fluid out of a congested area of the body and back into circulation. Due to its relaxing nature and ability to stimulate functioning of the immune system, MLD can be beneficial to almost anyone, but some of its most common uses are:

  • Lymphedema Management: Lymphatic drainage therapy plays an important role in the overall, long term treatment plan to reduce and control swelling caused by lymphedema.

  • Reduce post surgical and post injury swelling: Lymphatic drainage can assist in draining the resulting swollen tissue, reducing inflammation and discomfort while also promoting healing. This can be especially helpful both before surgery and postoperative for procedures such as liposuction, reconstruction, orthopedic and plastic surgery.

  • Stimulate the parasympathetic system: Stimulating the lymphatics can lead to an increased parasympathetic response ("rest and relax") and decreased sympathetic response ("fight or flight")

  • Immune system stimulation for preventative effects: Increased lymph flow to the lymph nodes results in an immunity boost

Lymphedema/Lipedema Management and Maintenance

The initial treatment of lymphedema depends on its severity. The maintenance phase of  treatment sometimes comes after a more intensive, initial phase of treatment that includes daily compression bandaging. This phase of lymphedema therapy is often carried out under an insurance covered program and can last from 2 to 6 weeks. Once the initial phase is completed, or if this intensive phase is not required, a maintenance phase is initiated. Lisa is trained to assist you in this aspect of your treatment which may include continuing MLD on a regular basis, limb volume tracking and compression garment monitoring.

Since there is no cure for lymphedema or lipedema, the goals of therapy include:

  • Reduce and control swelling

  • Keep other problems from developing or worsening

  • The ability to continue daily activities

  • Decrease pain

  • Improve the ability to use the limb

Lisa has experienced both phases of treatment herself and can work with you to help you to manage your lymphedema. Please visit the Lymphedema page for more information.

Massage Therapy (I am not taking any new massage therapy clients at this time)
Scientific studies have proven over and over that massage therapy reduces levels of stress hormones, improves sleep, boosts the immune system, reduces inflammation and increases alertness. It is also known to lower heart rate and blood pressure. An added bonus is the release of the "good mood" neurotransmitters, seratonin and dopamine. More gentle massage can even release the hormone oxytocin, which is known to produce the effect we know as the warm fuzzies!  These benefits of stress reduction and relaxation through massage techniques are some of Lisa's favorite things to offer clients. Her knowledge and use of aromatherapy enhances the stress busting effects of massage therapy.

Testimonials

Going to meet Lisa Messier was quite a treat and I learned a lot about my condition.

In a warm and inviting atmosphere, I was able to focus on my lymphedema and lipoedema.  Lisa did a phenomenal manual lymphatic massage and I felt so much better afterwards. My energy level was lifted; I felt an overall sense of wellness that I had not experienced in a long time.  Because this debilitating illness can be quite a challenge, Lisa introduced me to various theories, applications and even clinics which specialize in this area.

I would highly recommend Lisa to those of you who suffer from this often misunderstood and overlooked condition.

My best to all,
